NYC Schools Awarded Sustainability Grants. And We Couldn’t Be More Excited to Support Their Work

Celebrating NYCPS Sustainability Grant Winners!

This week, the Department of Energy & Sustainability (OES) announced the winners of the Annual Sustainability Project Grants, and we could not be more thrilled to celebrate the incredible schools selected across the city!

These grants – up to $4,950 per school – support projects that strengthen sustainability, climate action, and environmental learning. From garden builds to recycling improvements to cafeteria food-waste solutions, these funds empower educators and students to lead meaningful change in their communities.

This year’s award message reflects what we already know to be true:

OES is doing tireless, transformative work across NYC schools, ensuring that sustainability isn’t an add-on, it’s embedded into daily school life. Their leadership on cafeteria waste reduction, recycling systems, climate action days, and schoolwide sustainability planning has created real momentum for climate-smart education citywide.

FoodStream LEARN is proud to partner with schools in this movement.

Some of the awarded schools will be using their grant funding to bring hands-on gardening, cooking, and sustainability programs to their students, and we’re honored to support them with our Edible Kitchen: Sustainability & Climate Education program (pictured).

Our 6-week seed-to-table curriculum aligns beautifully with OES goals, helping schools connect:

  • Gardening & growing
  •  Scratch cooking & food systems learning
  • Culturally relevant, nutritious meals
  • Food-waste reduction & climate awareness
  • Student-led sustainability practices

These grants not only fund materials—they spark schoolwide change. They create new opportunities for students to explore climate solutions, practice real-world skills, and build confidence in the kitchen and the garden.

We’re grateful for the chance to partner with NYC schools as they put these grant funds to work, and we can’t wait to help bring their sustainability visions to life.

To All the Awarded Schools — Congratulations!

Please be sure to review the OES guidance, including:

  • Submitting the required acknowledgment form by Dec 19
  • Preparing procurement pathways early
  • Connecting your project to an upcoming Climate Action Day
  • Completing end-of-year reporting (OES has shared full instructions in the award email.)

We’re cheering you on and are ready to support your implementation plans every step of the way.

Here’s to a greener, healthier, more sustainable NYC school system.
